Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
